About us
Principal - Fiona Soulsby, MIDTA, MNATD

Head of Dance / Principal Teacher for Ballet & Tap

Wimbledon born Fiona has always loved all aspects of the Theatre. Her grandparents were Vaudeville performers appearing on stage at the London Palladium and her mother, Barbara, was a talented dancer and Soubrette soloist who, in 1946, founded the Barbara Lynn School of Dancing, now known as World of Dance. It was there that Fiona, taught by her mother from the age of two, did all her early training, winning many Junior and Senior London Festivals along the way.

At 16 she went to Corona Academy Stage School (now Ravenscourt Theatre School) to train in the Performing Arts but 6 months later changed to the Andrew Hardy School in Kensington and The Dance Centre, Covent Garden to specialise in her first love - dance. Fiona danced professionally in Pantomimes and Summer Shows around the country and worked with many famous names, including Roy Castle, Ian Lavender, Lionel Blair, Vince Eager & Arlene Phillips. During that time she gained honours in 2 major professional teaching qualifications (in between jobs!) and in 1974 was looking forward to her West End debut in the London production of ‘A Little Night Music’.

Sadly, due to a persistent back injury, Fiona was unable to continue her professional career as a dancer. Undaunted she turned her attention to teaching & choreographing both amateur and professional shows, set up an aerobics workout programme for Sutton & Cheam Squash Club (now Pinnacle) & did a daytime TV ‘funky’ video. In 1975 she became the principal teacher at the Barbara Lynn School of Dancing and upon her mother’s retirement in 1980 took over the school, changing the name to World of Dance. In 1991, after two major back surgeries, she learnt the ‘Pilates’ technique with Alan Herdman (himself taught by Joseph Pilates) and claims the technique to be the best for all back sufferers! Fiona lives on Box Hill with her husband David & their German Shepherd dog, Simba.
World of Dance boasts a strong team of dedicated and loyal teachers: -

Head of Drama - James Wheildon

Since completing a Drama and Theatre degree in 1999, James has gone on to produce drama and short films with people in the community. He has been with World of Dance since 1997, during which time he has written and produced over 30 short plays for the young actors.  James is the name behind ImageNation, running this community film making organisation based in South London.  He has also recently joined Act Too and directs the Baked Bean Theatre Company, a company for actors with learning disabilities.

Head of Musical Theatre (Singing) - Sharon Lloyd

Sharon was born into a very musical family and started winning major competitions as early as 9. She won a scholarship to study at the Welsh College of Music and Drama, and then to study at the university. Leaving Wales with a 1st class honours degree, she did her postgraduate diploma at the Guildford School of Music and Drama. She then secured a scholarship to the “Opera School” of the Royal College of Music. Whilst at the Opera School, Sharon sang on many occasions for the Queen and her family, and although she was merely a student, was considered to sing at the Royal wedding of Prince Charles and Lady Diana Spencer. Upon leaving the Opera School, Sharon joined the Monte Carlo Opera House for a year contract and fell in love with the European opera scene. Following an injury, she returned to London and became a school teacher. She was soon to return to Europe taking up principal soprano in Berlin. She opened the Commonwealth Games in 1998 and at the end of 1999 decided to become a full time mum! Nia, the result, is one of the Juniors at World of Dance. Sharon now dedicates her work time to teaching, directing, casting and vocal coaching and is enjoying working with the talented young voices at WOD.

Rachel Prior - Principal Teacher for Modern & Contemporary / Tap & Gymnastics

Rachel started dancing at the age of 7 at World of Dance, studying all subjects, and at the age of 14 she began assisting Fiona with the Beginner classes on Saturdays. After leaving school she went to Coventry University where she obtained an HND in Contemporary Dance. Rachel then travelled South to Chichester University where she gained a BA in Dance & Related Arts. Having maintained close contact with World of Dance, either as a soloist performer or choreographer for the WOD Shows, Rachel became a full-time teacher at WOD in 2000. She has performed in pantomime at the Ashcroft and Wimbledon Theatres and appeared on BBC TV with Oui 3. She also passed her "Exercise to Music" award and during the day Rachel works at one of Merton’s Primary Schools, teaching children from 3 – 11 years, including those with Autism. She teaches fitness club from year 1 to year 6 (plus whole school aerobics with 300 children in the summer!) and has been involved with the choreography of many school productions.

Annabel Reed – Principal Teacher for Gymnastics / Modern

Annabel Started dancing at World of Dance when she was 3 years old and has always loved performing. At the age of 14 she won the Laine Theatre Arts “Summer School Scholarship” and was a member of their “Junior Squad”. She left World of Dance in 2007 and is now studying Musical Theatre at The Guildford School of Acting where she received the “Musical Theatre Girl Award 2008”.  Annabel made her West End debut recently at Her Majesty’s Theatre.  She is very pleased to return to World of Dance as a Teacher & Choreographer and performed in this year’s WOD Show at the Secombe Theatre in Epsom.

Helen Reed - Admin / Teacher, Tap & Modern

Helen danced from a very early age until serious illness forced her to stop at the age of 17. On meeting Fiona at an Aerobics class 17 years ago, she was inspired to reignite her love for dance when her daughter, Annabel, joined World of Dance as a three year old. Helen initially trained as a Nursery Nurse, then qualified and worked as an Aerobicsc Instructor and in 2001 gained a BSC Honours Degree in Physiotherapy. She now works as a Senior Physiotherapist in Neurology at St Helier Hospital & is always on hand to offer advice at World of Dance. Helen loves the challenge (really!) of teaching and choreographing & is delighted to be back working with the Juniors again at World of Dance.

Julia Coleman - Guest Teacher, Ballet & Contemporary

Julia’s long association with the school began when she was a mere 10 years old! Full-time work in cancer research has limited her to only occasional teaching, so she has enjoyed the opportunity to arrange a number in this year’s show. Having just finished a PhD, Julia can now spend more time with her other hobbies, which also include performing as an actor for a local theatre group, Newstagers, and photography.

Natalie McHale - Guest Teacher, Lyrical & Tap

Natalie started her dance training at World of Dance at the age of 4, participating in every style of dance. It was there that her love of performing grew and was to become her ambition in life. At seventeen Natalie decided to audition for a place in one of the musical theatre colleges and won a half scholarship to attend the Urdang Academy. Having successfully graduated after 3years of training, she now has a professional diploma in musical theatre. Natalie now plans to audition for Musical Shows and hopefully we will soon see her on a London stage in the West End.
